Medical Devices Industry 2012

Medical Device Business 2012 – Market Research Report | BEC

Press release - According to a Cochrane review, clinical trials funded by the pharmaceutical industry reported a more favorable framework of the effects of drugs and medical devices than non-sponsored. The researchers are calling for a careful evaluation and management of possible bias (bias) related to sponsorship by industry in the production of guidelines and systematic reviews.

Rome, December 12, 2012 - The results obtained from clinical trials influence the recommendations that doctors make about medications and other medical interventions. Therefore, it is important that studies are designed, conducted and reported without bias in favor of one or more interventions or products in the studio. The fact that clinical studies are increasingly being funded by the pharmaceutical industry makes it difficult to ensure it remains so. One industrial sponsors may influence the results and the way in which these are shown in a better light to present the company and its products, for example by selecting and reporting only positive results.
Previous audits have shown that studies funded by the pharmaceutical industry produce more favorable results. The new revision extends these considerations to the field of medical devices and assess whether the new requirements regarding the registration of clinical trials have improved this situation.
The researchers conducted a systematic review of 48 studies comparing drugs and medical devices with placebo or other treatments on a wide range of diseases and conditions, from cardiovascular disease to psychiatric disorders. The studies sponsored by the pharmaceutical industry reported greater benefits and fewer side effects compared to studies not sponsored. The publications that describe the studies sponsored general conclusions are more favorable, and the sections of the results and conclusions of these publications were more often discrepant with each other.
"Our results suggest that studies of drugs and medical devices are most often funded by favorable to the sponsor's products, " explains Andreas Lundh, a researcher at the Nordic Cochrane Centre, Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, Denmark. "These results support the calls of the scientific community towards greater transparency on how clinical trials are conducted, better access to information and raw data."
Not always possible to influence the type of sponsorship is taken properly into account in the guidelines and assessments of the effectiveness of drugs and medical devices. The researchers suggest that the guidelines and revisions, including the Cochrane systematic reviews should improve the transparency when declaring the sponsorship shows the results of studies funded by the pharmaceutical industry and considering financing a factor that increases the risk of distortion (bias) in the study.
"The sponsor should be reported in the original studies published, but must be taken into account when the results of the studies are reported in other studies or documents, " says Lisa Bero, one of the authors of the review and lecturer at the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Institute for Health Policy Studies at the University of California, San Francisco, United States. "If we agree that the funding from the pharmaceutical industry is a major source of distortion of the studies, then we should expect to develop better methods for reporting, assessing and managing industrial sponsors bias in systematic reviews that assess the effects of drugs and of medical devices.
